About Carlotta Taylor
Award Winning, Author, Speaker, Trainer and Coach, Carlotta Taylor transcended from a victim in foster care, to a survivor, advocate, and sounding board for the child welfare industry. After many years of flinching due to psychological abuse, sexual abuse and trauma, Ms. Taylor is now a sought-after speaker and author of her best selling book, “No More Flinching: 5 Steps to Overcoming Adversity” who declares a No More Flinching mindset everywhere she goes.
Ms. Taylor earned her Bachelors of Arts in Social Services, Masters in Science and Leadership from Belhaven University and speaking certifications and training with The John Maxwell Team. Ms. Taylor, also a Veteran, held a 15 year law enforcement career before being called to higher heights. Ms. Taylor brings unique perspectives gained from her lived foster care experience coupled with her employment as a child protection detective, robbery homicide detective, working hand in hand with child advocacy centers, counselors, social workers, police officers, detectives, school officials, judges, and more. In other words, Ms. Taylor has lived in both worlds. Ms. Taylor is the founder of Somebody Step In non-profit organization for mentorship and more for foster youth and aged out foster youth. Organizations that hire Carlotta because of her powerful capability to connect and engage with her audiences and assist in rebirthing their “why,” see a significant growth of enthusiasm in the workplace. Carlotta is the head coach of “No More Flinching Academy” who coaches speakers with a purpose to greatness. Can you share with us a memorable experience from your journey as a speaker and how it relates to the themes of literary inspiration and empowerment, especially in the context of Chosen Pen’s mission?
Carlotta Taylor: I recently spoke at the Juvenile Justice Symposium in Biloxi, Mississippi. At the end of my talk, a lady awaited my presence as I spoke to various leaders in child welfare who remained in the room. She wanted to purchase a copy of my book. However, when I connected with her, I noticed she was hiding her face and looking down. Moments later I noticed she was in tears and choking up, rather badly. She explained to me that I didn’t know just how inspirational my presentation was to her. It was clear she had endured much trauma, I didn’t have to ask. I simply gave her a hug. At that moment, my cup as a speaker refilled. Her sincere feedback reminded me of why I share my story and inspire others to flinch no more, in life. No More Flinching movement is in perfect alignment with Chosen Pens mission. I was chosen by God to survive severe child abuse to share my story and encourage and educate others. As a former child protection detective, I never worked a child abuse case that was worse than my own. Although being a speaker was never on my radar prior to publishing my book, it was the very next step a few weeks later. Chosen Pen’s mission is the path to greatness for anyone inspired to write and speak.
Chosen Pen Publishing believes in the power of storytelling. How do you see storytelling as a catalyst for personal growth and forgiveness, and can you provide an example from your own life or work that illustrates this?
Carlotta Taylor: Storytelling brings everything to life and is the best way to engage with your audience or readers. Being authentic and vulnerable helps others to learn from your mistakes and makes your delivery motivational. I’ve always heard that if you think you have it bad, wait until you hear someone’s story that’s worse than yours. Instantly you’ll begin to feel better knowing someone who had less than you won anyway. Transparency is key. Humans are emotional creatures, storytelling is the best way to capture attention, emotions and energy. I never keynote without sharing a part of my story or others stories. In my book, “No More Flinching: 5 Steps To Overcoming Adversity,” I share various placements I encountered in and out of foster care, shelters and the parental abusive home. I was transferred 26 times from the age of 5 to the age of 13. When I share my story of how I’ve overcome adversity, and survived even when all the odds were stacked against me, it reboots and recharges others mentals and ignites their fire that burns within. A lady read my book, and called me in tears. She told me she hadn’t spoken to her father in years. But once she read my book, “No More Flinching,” she reached out and called her father because if I could forgive my father for all the things he had done to me. She said surely she can forgive her father who didn’t attend her wedding. That relationship was rekindled. Her life was changed, because I shared my story. With Chosen Pen Publishing, forgiveness is the foundation. You cannot soar in life carrying a heavy load.
