Laurencia Burt is a passionate and giving person by nature. It’s no wonder she decided to jump into the self-care business.

The Social worker and mompreneur was sexually assaulted at work and once thought that her life was over on numerous occasions. From the assault and birth complications that came with having a pre-mature children.

To cope with the pain she decided to help others not give up, to love themselves and overcome.

She launched her own skincare business as a role model to men and women that have been in a dark place.

As a busy wife, mother of two, and two-time entrepreneur, it was important for her to develop a skincare line that wouldn’t require unnecessary steps to achieve flawlessly glowing skin. The Brooklyn Sky Skincare Collection features ingredients that can easily be understood, so there’s no second-guessing your choice to use the products. This collection features healthy and chemical-free items for every part of your body.

Additionally, as a certified body contouring technician, Laurencia specializes in laser lipo, body cavitation, skin tightening and butt enhancements. All these services are available at the Waist Deep Beauty Spa.

In a world where women want to feel good about their bodies, Laurencia has made it a top priority to help women all around achieve those goals.

We Empower Magazine got an exclusive interview with Laurencia Burt

How long have you been in business? Where are you located and who is your target market?

Laurencia: We have been in business since December 21, 2020. We opened up our beauty suite back in January of 2021. Within 6 months or less, we started the Brooklyn Sky Collection named after my beautiful daughter, Brooklyn (our rainbow baby). We had the Brooklyn Sky Collection for less than a year and are located in Atlanta, Georgia.

How did the business name come about? What is the difference between Brooklyn Sky and Waist Deep LLC? What are the similarities?

Laurencia: The business name Brooklyn Sky came about from our beautiful daughter who is our rainbow baby. She and I almost lost our lives through the process. She’s been such a light at the end of a very dark tunnel. We lost a baby two years prior to having her. I wanted to have something that is significant to pass down to my daughter and to my son. Being that she is our last child, I definitely wanted to do something more special for her.

The difference between the Brooklyn Sky Collection and Waist Deep is that the Brooklyn Sky Collection is a skincare and cosmetics line. Waist Deep LLC is an esthetics service program that provides body contouring, facials, and things of that nature. I also created my own CBD sugar scrub and coffee sugar scrub from the Waist Deep brand as well.

Congratulations! How does it feel to have your products in GNC and how did you get to this moment?

Laurencia: It is such a surreal feeling and humbling experience. I feel like I am not fully able to engage in it because I’m still working in the trenches, but I am so grateful and happy for the continuous love and support from the people I know and don’t know.

We’ve been doing extremely well. We’ve just launched officially in GNC and had quite a few sales. We will see what the numbers look like soon, but we definitely see everything selling out.

Also, we’ve been getting really great feedback about the Unicorn Dreams body butter and sugar polish. We are so excited about that, and this new opportunity and venture.

We’ve been educating the GNC staff about our products, what the benefits are, and the origins of how the business began. We pride ourselves on having less than 7–9 ingredients in our products.

Our products are vegan and cruelty free. These products are designed for women and men who may have sensitive skin, severely dry skin, eczema, or psoriasis or suffer with in-grown hair in their intimate areas. Our products are amazing and not just because I am the founder, but the products are amazing because a little goes a long way as far as our body butter. It last on your skin and everything we do is about quality. We make sure what you put on your body is healthy and smells amazing.

Our sugar polish is amazing is well. If you have dark spots on your skin, it helps to lighten those. You can also use the products if you do waxing around and on your intimate areas to reduce having ingrown hairs and such. Also if you want to exfoliate your skin to get rid of those dead cells on and all the yuckiness off to replenish your skin to keep it soft and smooth like silk. If you have stretch marks, the products help to lighten those. As well as reduce the appearance of cellulite if used properly and as directed.

I got to this moment by the grace of God. He’s opened up doors and showing me the direction that I need to go. I have amazing friends and family and people I’ve just met along the way who say the light in my eyes and truly wanted to help and have extended their time and resources to help me grow and be a better entrepreneur for the brand.

It took a lot of sleepless nights, sweat, tears, money, and having to shift my mindset from an employee to an entrepreneur. That’s a shift that is pretty significant and it requires a lot of motivation. I motivate myself pretty well but it’s a different level of motivation because so many things come against you. People who you thought were really in your corner and are really not. People look at you like you’re crazy and ask why are you doing this? You already make good money..why are you doing this? Or thought that this was a hobby. It’s been those kinds of comments that can really wear and break you down or make you feel that you’re wasting time. I had to learn and pray and ask God for direction because he’s the one that leads and guides me. I always ask God that if this is not what I’m supposed to be doing please let me know.

At the end of the day, I don’t want anything to cause damage or friction within my family but, sometimes when you’re growing not everyone understands it because the vision was not given to everybody, it was given to you. There may not be understanding in that, but there is a lesson for everyone to learn and to show that everything is not the same as it was 30 or 40 years ago as far as careers. Things are changing and evolving at a quicker rate because of technology. I would say I learned a lot about myself that I really am strong, smart, and amazing. I see that in my daughter when she looks at me. This is her name and business that I created and started for her. It’s bigger than me, someone just had to start the journey to get it going.

What does your business mean to you and what impact do you want to make in the lives of your clients?

Laurencia: Both businesses mean the world to me to have this experience with my family. To have a thought or idea and to see the magnitude of the growth exponentially in a short period of time, less than two years is beyond your wildest dreams. To also be given these opportunities to be on platforms such as Walmart, Amazon, and now GNC stores is surreal. Five years ago, I never thought I’d be doing anything like this and be on shelves in stores. My friends, the people who don’t even know me, the people who just met me, or people that have never met me have been sending me snapshots and tagging me about their experience visiting the stores and supporting me. It’s truly a blessing and I’m very grateful.

The impact that I want to make on my clients and consumers is that I want the products to be a benefit to those who use them. I want people to have the experience and joy of trying the products and the products work for whatever their need is. If they’re suffering from eczema we have products to reduce inflammation and help so that they don’t have any future breakouts. Same as with psoriasis, or with areas you may feel insecure about with stretch marks and cellulite. Anything that we can do to reduce it, empower women or men we are here for that. As a woman, I have insecurities myself and have things that I want to work on. So that is why this brand was created. I understand that state of mind and place and want to take care of yourself, make improvements, and look and feel good.

Most importantly as the brand is rebuilding and growing, we are going to be setting up a 501c3. Having my baby girl as a premature child at almost 6 months I want to be able to give back to and partner with different agencies. Such as for women who have fertility issues like myself. I had to have a Hysterectomy shortly after I had her because there were so many complications that were going on with my body physically. I also want to be able to help those with premature babies. Alot of parents may not have that support to help their kids, especially during a pandemic. That can be stressful for new parents and parents that already have children.

Lastly, because I am a survivor of sexual abuse, I want to give back to those programs as well. We have quite a few things coming down the line as we grow while I will be able to financially support these various organizations I partner with through our foundation.

I am all about service and servitude and giving back to others.

Any shoutouts you would like to give?

Laurencia: Yes, I first would love to shout out my family. My husband Lamar Burt, my children, Cameron, Arrington, Brooklyn Skylar, and my little puppy dog Dillon.

Secondly, I want to shout out my sister, Lavonna Murphy-Owona, she’s my Irish twin. I always bounce ideas off of her. I know she be tired of me calling and texting her. She is just so gracious every time or cracks jokes on me. She will be our COO of the business as we move forward.

My baby brother Lawrence Murphy Jr. He’s a God send and has helped me a lot as well. With perspective, or physically helping out with vending opportunities, and traveling.

I have some really great friends, my wonderful assistant/everything, Jessica who helps me with everything that I can’t even tell you what.

Jakeem Smith who introduced me to Jessica. He’s so dope! He’s in production, PR, and event planning.

And sending a special shoutout to photography at AZU Studios, my barber Step The Barber , my make up artist Demarlo West & Geisha Boii, and Marita owner of Silhouette Beauty located in Mableton, GA.

Additional shout out to my copywriter Markysha Cannon IG @Kysh_921

Shout to my organizations Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc., and Spa Boss Tribe under the leadership of Candace Holyfield.

I have a host of friends and family members who really just stuck it out with me and helped at any capacity. I love everybody. Even the haters, because they kept me motivated to keep pushing. I love yall!
