About Nanette M. Buchanan
Nanette M. Buchanan is a native of Newark, New Jersey now residing in Fayetteville, North Carolina. She first set her pen to pad, as written expressions of her love for poetry. To date, her pen to pad accomplishments includes three volumes of poetry, two published children’s book, and thirteen published novels. When asked what genre’ best describes her novels, she teasingly answers, “Reality Fiction”. Her preferred genre’ is women’s fiction or crime fiction, but readers will attest they all have suspense, mystery and a dramatic twist.
At the start of her employment Nanette worked as a Recreation Supervisor at the Newark Westward Boys and Girls Club where she enjoyed developing programs and working with the youth. She was also a track coach for the Newark YMCA for twenty years. It was her involvement with the youth that led her to pursue a career in State Corrections. “Watching the youth fall prey to the community pitfalls in crime. I thought being a part of the system I could somehow steer them in another direction. I filled out the application with the intent to become a part of the juvenile system. After discovering the politics in the system, I decided to take the test for a placement in the adult facilities as an officer.”
After twenty-five years and retiring as a Sergeant, Nanette has begun speaking about the realities many must face in life. As a motivational and transformational speaker, as well as a topic expert on subjects that many in society face, it is her goal to open a dialogue that will mend deep rooted issues for many. Her company is I Pen Visions, LLC which hosts many of her ongoing projects. As the CEO, she has launched I Pen Podcast – “Let’s Talk About” and “Interviews and Conversations.
It is her goal to become a successful speaker and author without limits, writing and producing plays that feature her poems as well as adaptations of her novels on the “big screen”. This diverse author is available for interviews, chats, signings, and speaking engagements.
Interview
Can you share with us a memorable experience from your journey as a speaker and how it relates to the themes of literary inspiration and empowerment, especially in the context of Chosen Pen’s mission?
Nanette M. Buchanan: Working with youth at the Boys & Girls Club as well as visiting schools for the Department of Corrections, I found many youth with aspirations and goals for their future, but many of them struggled with the ability to read, write, and communicate. The basis, the beginning to diminish this problem is promoting literacy on all levels.
Chosen Pen Publishing believes in the power of storytelling. How do you see storytelling as a catalyst for personal growth and forgiveness, and can you provide an example from your own life or work that illustrates this?
Nanette M. Buchanan: Everyone loves a good story, but most want a story that reflects them. Life is a story, a combination of a journey by one but a map for many. Reading delivers a roadmap, a way to accomplish the dreams and visions of many. I began writing poetry in college, an escape from frustrations. It became a way for me to express concerns, address inner thoughts, and share without the worry of one’s criticism. It opened a world for me, I didn’t realize until later in my pen to pad journey, that writing, those poems were my foundation. A part of literacy that gave me freedom and the ability to excel in my future endeavors.
As the speaker for Chosen Pen’s 10th Anniversary Celebration, what unique insights or perspectives do you plan to bring to the event to inspire both authors and readers in attendance, especially in the context of your association with Forbes Business Council?
Nanette M. Buchanan: I want the audience to understand that literacy is not just a mandated course in school. It touches the basics needed for our living and survival.
How do you think Chosen Pen Publishing has contributed to shaping the landscape of professional publishing and why do you believe it is considered a writer’s preferred choice? Can you highlight any specific success stories or partnerships that exemplify this?
Nanette M. Buchanan: Chosen Pen Publishing has a different approach in professional publishing. It attracted me right away… Collaborations, professionalism beyond the hours of business, understanding the gaps and needs to develop one’s writing and one’s journey. It’s different, and as a self-published author, the bond that’s created through continuous support gives you that nudge, that voice one needs. Being an author, just writing is one thing, but to have someone work with you and challenge you to do more… that’s Chosen Pen.
The event aims to immerse attendees in a world of literary inspiration. Can you give us a sneak peek into what attendees can expect from your keynote address and how it will resonate with the broader themes of the celebration, including storytelling, personal growth, and empowerment?
Nanette M. Buchanan: Reality… I write reality fiction, but my address will be about the reality as it relates to literacy. To face reality, we must first understand we are a part of it, find the problems, understand the need for change, the desperation in the statistics, and find a resolve. Without this our reality can become our nightmare.
