Her Life, Career, Business, Leadership, Family, and Ministry
Dr. Portia Basham, popularly called Lady Portia, is a mother, strategist, and empowerment coach, who ministers the Gospel with complete confidence, radiance, and grace. More than a strategist, she is also a mentor, biblical teacher, international speaker, 5x Amazon Best-Seller Author, and leadership coach. Dr. Portia is a savvy entrepreneur and hospitality expert with more than twenty-five years of experience. She is the CEO and Founder of “The Purposed Woman Coaching and Online Agency.” Portia resides in South Florida with her husband and their two adorable children.
EARLY LIFE
Portia was born on the beautiful Caribbean Island of Saint Lucia. At seventeen, she started her career in hospitality at the Island’s most prominent resort, Royal St. Lucian. Portia later moved on to Windjammer Landing Villa Beach Resort as a Reservationist. However, she rose from reservationist to the resort’s Sales Manager through her diligence and dedication.
In 2003, Portia won the title “Miss St. Lucia Hospitality and Tourism.” She represented St. Lucia at home and abroad in promoting the country’s tourism industry. Portia leads and advocates a balanced life as she successfully combines the demands of career and education. In 2004, she backed a Bachelor’s Degree in Hospitality Management without failing in family, ministry, and business.
MIDAS TOUCH
After Portia got married in 2005, she moved with her family to Orlando-Florida. Soon, she established a wedding and events business. In 2007, Portia actively contributed to successfully launching of a 187-room condominium resort near the Disney theme park. Subsequently, her dynamic leadership and valuable experience earned her a top-level position where she ran the resort’s Rooms Division team for a year until 2008.
In addition to her Orlando- based wedding business, she established a home-based business focusing on designing, producing, and selling custom children’s clothing, Mona & Sacha.
HEART OF GOLD
In 2008, Portia founded a society known as the RoyalTea Ladies Society—a social and empowerment group for women. Her organization exists to serve women who desire to advance their business goals and give back to the community.
RoyalTea Ladies have since supported local charities and non-profit organizations. They have raised thousands of dollars in donations and are currently serving over twenty families. They also render charity services to needy women, children with autism, and many other worthy causes.
More importantly, Portia is a super active RoyalTea Lady due to her interest in serving, supporting, and advocating for mothers of autistic children. Portia’s first son, Zachariah, saved to save, was diagnosed with autism, which affected his speech. He was just two and a half years old. Her vibrant, intelligent, and handsome little boy has since faced the challenges of life with autism.
This development devastated the entire family, but Portia and her husband encouraged themselves and decided to focus on God’s faithfulness, Zachariah’s happiness, and the therapists’ dedication to help. So, rather than giving up on their lovely son, they committed to helping him handle the challenges of a special needs diagnosis.
Moved with compassion, Portia started educating herself on how to help mothers with children with special needs. And by God’s grace, love, patience, and determination, Portia and her family have been able to weather the storm until today.
Although Zachariah still doesn’t speak fluently, Portia is grateful. She gladly commented “[Zachariah] is polite, potty-trained, can write his name, do basic mathematics and gives me the best hugs in the world.” Currently, Zachariah is thirteen years old, and he is happy, prosperous, and progressive. He is presently in Middle School.
Consequently, Dr. Portia’s experience over the years of caring for Zachariah was what spurred her commitment and selfless desire to provide support and coaching for mothers of children with special needs.
VOICE OF HOPE
Dr. Portia is a devout Christian and a Minister of the Gospel in a nondenominational church. She recently completed her Master of Art program in Biblical Studies through the South Florida Bible College in Deerfield Beach, Florida, and received the prestigious President’s Award. Dr. Portia has earned a Doctorate Degree in Christian Leadership. Shortly after her Master’s program, Portia founded an online community known as “SHE MINISTRIES,” primarily for Ladies of Royalty who are determined to ‘Stand Firm on God’s Purpose for Their Lives and Business.’
The SHE MINISTRY has 2 Kings 4:7 (“Go, sell the oil and pay your debt; and you and your sons live on the rest”) as their guide and pillar. Dr. Portia’s the Biblical Teacher and founder at She Ministries, and she reaches thousands of her social media followers through free devotions, online Bible studies, and business classes. Her ultimate goal is to continue to pass valuable and experience-based advice to women seeking to further their careers and life goals. Hence, in 2019, she launched “The Purposed Woman Coaching and Online Agency,” a business strategy and leadership platform designed with resources to assist aspiring and new female entrepreneurs who are missing the foundational pieces needed for a sustainable and successful business.

Can you share with us a memorable experience from your journey as a speaker and how it relates to the themes of literary inspiration and empowerment, especially in the context of Chosen Pen’s mission?
Dr. Portia Basham: As a seasoned speaker, I have had the privilege of sharing my life experiences countless times. Yet, one particular speaking engagement stands out vividly in my mind. I was invited to speak at a literary conference where the theme of empowerment and inspiration was at the forefront. I spoke to the audience about my humble beginnings, my struggles, and how I overcame them. I also shared my passion for writing and how it became the catalyst for change in my life. I was met with a standing ovation, and I realized then that my story had touched the hearts of those in attendance. It was a memorable experience for me as I saw firsthand how literary inspiration can empower individuals to overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams.
Chosen Pen Publishing believes in the power of storytelling. How do you see storytelling as a catalyst for personal growth and forgiveness, and can you provide an example from your own life or work that illustrates this?
Dr. Portia Basham: Storytelling has the incredible power to transform a person from inside out. It acts as a catalyst for personal growth and forgiveness by taking people on a journey to explore their emotions, values, and beliefs. Through storytelling, individuals can process their experiences in a safe and constructive way, allowing them to come to terms with emotional events and forgive themselves and others for past mistakes. Personally, I’ve experienced the transformative effect of storytelling in my life and work. As an author, I have written books that are deeply personal, and each time I write, I feel the power of storytelling and its ability to help me understand myself better. By sharing my story with others, I have received numerous messages from readers who shared similar experiences and found comfort in realizing they’re not alone. Storytelling transforms not only the person telling the story but also the ones listening to it, making forgiveness and personal growth possible.

Dr. Portia Basham: I had the pleasure of attending a recent event where I had the opportunity to share my thoughts and insights with authors and readers alike. Drawing on my experiences as a member of the Forbes Business Council, I spoke about the ongoing neglect of women in leadership positions. In today’s world, it’s alarming to see how women are often overlooked for top leadership positions, despite having the necessary skills and abilities. I challenged male-dominated leadership communities to take notice of this trend and start thinking about developing comprehensive programs that prepare and credential women for leadership roles. My message resonated with the audience, and I was thrilled to see hope and inspiration on their faces. The event was a fantastic opportunity for me to share ideas and connect with like-minded individuals, and I am grateful to have been a part of it.
