Coach Alphonso Short‘s experience includes over 36 years of Federal Service in addition to 30 years of working with our youth by way of volunteerism. Whether serving as an AAU Basketball coach, serving on the board of various nonprofits that served youth, or coordinating youth programs himself, He has been recognized and awarded for his service and impact on the community.
As an author, his literary works include a monthly article, Men At Work, published in ARRAY Magazine, that spotlights the contributions men are making in their respective communities. In addition to this, he has published two inspirational devotionals, Be Transformed and Sunrise.

Coach Alphonso Short: The discussion was well received by all in attendance. A few points or takeaways were (1) we have crises in life that cause pain, whether physical or mental, and we must find productive ways to cope; (2) forgiveness of others is necessary; (3) just as important is the forgiveness of oneself and lastly, (4) requesting therapy or counseling is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign of strength.
How important is forgiveness in personal growth and overall mental well-being, and how did this panel contribute to raising awareness on this issue?
Coach Alphonso Short: The panelist did an outstanding job of conveying the importance of forgiveness. Whether sharing from a professional view or by way of their own personal journeys, the message was clear. Your wellness in all areas of life is tied to forgiveness.
What did you find most inspiring or surprising about the discussions on forgiveness during the event?
Coach Alphonso Short: Forgiveness is a choice that only you can make. It’s the gift you give yourself.

Coach Alphonso Short: The event in its entirety was one of excellence. For many, it was an educational eye-opener, especially when it came to the topic of forgiveness and its connection to all areas of life. The literacy panel revealed the importance of adults, guardians and educators staying on the cusp of the educational needs of our children. It was evident that a holistic approach must be taken when considering literacy advocacy for children as well as adults. The panelist representing women in business made it clear that embracing free enterprise includes making mistakes, seeking guidance from others, learning new skills and perspectives coexists while working to make a profit and a difference.
Can you share a memorable moment or story from the event that exemplifies its impact on the attendees?
Coach Alphonso Short: While all of the personal stories shared during the event were memorable, one story shared by a panelist on the forgiveness panel stood out among the rest. The story of her overcoming insurmountable odds from childhood was not only unbelievable but inspirational. When the trauma you face is inflicted upon you by the very people that you depend on to care for you and nurture you, how can you trust anyone? How do you overcome it? As with most of those who shared their stories, the pain becomes your purpose which leads to the passion of seeing others overcome as well. Her story was powerful and one that many of us who heard it won’t forget.
How do you envision the ripple effect of the event’s discussions on forgiveness and mental wellness in the larger community?
Coach Alphonso Short: The more the topics are shared, many will become more conscious of the subject matter, but become more committed to making an impact within their smaller circle. I hope that everyone who experiences each message finds a way to become part of the solution.
