The narrative of a group of Ukrainian journalists stuck in the city of Mariupol, “20 Days in Mariupol,” won the best documentary film award.
On March 11, the 96th Academy Awards Ceremony was organised. The room was filled with creative souls, and the Best Documentary Award was won by the AP (Associated Press) and an American public broadcaster. The documentary’s theme was a group of international journalists trapped in the besieged southern city of Mariupol in 2022. The whole documentary represents the terrible war scene between Russia-Ukraine. It has captured all the dreadful arena.
Thank you to The Academy for tonight’s tremendous honor. We are deeply grateful and hope the award brings urgent awareness to events happening in Ukraine. – 20 Days in Mariupol
At the time, Director Mstyslav Chernov was a journalist and photographer who worked for the “Associated Press.” He emphasised in his speech that the frontline cities of Ukraine were still being attacked and falling, as well as what had transpired in Mariupol. This clearly determines the painful struggle the Ukrainian people endured during the conflict, but it also represents their courage to carry on fighting in the Russia—Ukraine war.
The 96th Academy Awards ceremony begins now. This is a special day that would not have been possible without the dedication and skill of many people who helped make, distribute, and promote our film. Thank you for being part of the 20 Days In Mariupol team.

The astounding thing is that many media journalists initiated by American Entertainment Magazine have already guessed that the best documentary award would go to the “20 Days in Mariupol” team. Stating that the documentary was “too important to be ignored,” previously, “Mariupol’s 20 Days” had its Sundance Film Festival premiere in January 2023 and had taken home the Audience Award in the documentary category.
The documentary 20 Days in Mariupol won an Oscar last night.
The film's director, Mstyslav Chernov: "This is the first Oscar in the Ukrainian history… But probably I will be the first director on this stage who will say 'I wish I've never made this film'."

Moving forward, “20 Days in Mariupol” is the first documentary in the 178-year history of “The Associated Press” to win an Oscar. After Russia attacked the city in 2022, “Associated Press” correspondents continued to document the horrors of Russian aggression and invasion acts, which set the scene for the shooting. At that point, the only foreign media team still present in Malibo was the “Associated Press” team. They captured horrific battle sights, including mass graves, attacks and bombs on the obstetrics and gynecologist hospital, and dying children, shaking the entire world thoroughly.
“When I filmed I cried;
when I edited I cried;
when I watched I cried;
Emotion always remain and it hurts, but it’s what makes us people.”— #Oscar winner Mstyslav Chernov about “20 days in Mariupol” in DW News pic.twitter.com/ovArN9Lamt
