“We are in Year 2 of the AI platform shift and must ensure we have the capability and capacity to innovate boldly. I’m very excited to announce that Mustafa Suleyman and Karén Simonyan are joining Microsoft to form a new organization called Microsoft AI, focused on advancing Copilot and our other consumer AI products and research.”
On the official Microsoft blog, Nadela writes, “Mustafa will be EVP and CEO, Microsoft AI, and joins the senior leadership team (SLT), reporting to me. Karén is joining this group as Chief Scientist, reporting to Mustafa.”

Who is Mustafa Suleyman?
Mustafa has become a renowned person in the AI industry; before joining Microsoft, Suleyman co-founded Inflection AI, a startup focused on developing a personal AI assistant named Pi. While Pi garnered praise for its user-friendly interface and supportive personality, it couldn’t compete with industry giants like OpenAI’s ChatGPT in terms of its user base. Also, Suleyman leaded an AI lab, DeepMind, with partners Shane Legg, and Demis Hassabis in 2010. This foundation soon gained popularity in the technology community. Later, Google took over DeepMind in 2014 and announced Mustafa as its Co-founder.

In 2017, the UK’s data protection agency revealed that London’s Royal Free Hospital had illegally granted the AI startup access to 1.6 million patient details. The company faced criticism for its work in the healthcare industry, for which Suleyman then apologised.

Suleyman was born in August 1984 in London. His mother was an English teacher, and his father was a Syrian-born taxi driver. After senior secondary education, Suleyman enrolled at Oxford University to study philosophy and theology but left school in his second year. Meanwhile, he built an empire of Muslim Youth Helpline, a nonprofit counseling service. Gradually, it grew to be one of the biggest mental health support networks for Muslims in the UK.
