Instagram Teen Users: On Tuesday, Instagram announced new settings to protect users under 18. The social media platform will automatically make accounts private and limit messaging to only connected users.
Teens will also be restricted on who can tag them in photos or comments. Additionally, they’ll be placed in the app’s most restrictive content setting, which will limit sensitive material in Reels and Explore pages.
To promote healthy usage, Instagram will send notifications to teens after 60 minutes of daily use, encouraging them to take a break. Sleep mode will also mute notifications and auto-reply to direct messages between 10 pm and 7 am.

Users under 16 will need parental permission to change these settings. Parents will have more control through Instagram’s supervision feature, allowing them to:
āļøMonitor their teen’s messages
āļøSet daily time limits
āļøBlock usage during specific periods
āļøView topics their teen is exploring
Meta designed these updates with parents and teens in mind, addressing concerns about online interactions, content, and time management.

New users will experience these changes immediately while existing teen users will see updates within 60 days. These updates come amidst growing concerns about social media’s impact on teens and kids. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously apologized to affected families, and U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy highlighted the need for caution.
