What do you think, do robots have emotions? Do they understand what they are doing? Can work pressure also affect the mental status of robots?
First Robot Victim: Surprisingly, the answer to the last question is yes! A heavy workload led a civil servant robot to commit suicide in South Korea. All over the nation, the discussion has been triggered by the robot suicide, which was working in Gumi City Council in South Korea. The neighbourhood was left with shock and grief after the incident that occurred last Thursday at around 4 p.m.
This event not only surprised the country but sparked international coverage. Reportedly, it is now widely known as the first “robot suicide.”
According to the city council, the ‘Robot Supervisor’ was found smashed and lying in the stairwell between the first and second floors of the council building. Mirroring humans, witnesses reported that the robot “circled in one spot as if something was there” before the incident occurred. The exact cause of the fall is still under investigation, and the city council official said, “Pieces have been collected and will be analysed by the company.”
The Robot was officially employed by the city hall staff, who have actively supported daily document delivery, promoting the city, and informing the residents.
About the victim “Robot”
A pioneering robot started working in the city in August 2023, a big step forward for robotic help. This Robot, created by the California startup Bear Robotics, which specialises in robot-waiter technology, operated from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and was issued a civil service officer card.
Considering the recent event, the Gumi City Council has stated that it does not intend to add a second robot officer in response to a recent incident.
The news soon spread on the internet, and now people are questioning the workload and the circumstances behind the incident.
