Apple AirPods with built-in Cameras
Tech Update: It has been reported that Apple is working on new AirPods with Cameras. The infrared radiation (IR) cameras in the upcoming AirPods will be similar to those built into the iPhone Face ID receiver.
Just realized all the features here can be built on an iPhone.

According to reports, the Cupertino-based tech giant’s new true wireless stereo (TWS) will provide an improved spatial audio experience when paired with the Apple Vision Pro, its mixed-reality headset. The company highlighted new AirPods features last month at WWDC, including gesture-based controls for interacting with Siri, head-tracking capabilities for gaming, and enhanced audio quality for voice calls.
When is Apple releasing AirPods with cameras?
“My latest supply chain survey indicates that Apple plans to mass-produce new AirPods with camera modules by 2026, featuring an IR camera similar to the iPhone Face ID receiver (not the transmitter),” TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo wrote in a Medium post.
According to further reports, adding this new functionality to AirPods will enhance the spatial audio experience when used with the Vision Pro and any other future Apple headsets the firm may release.
Users who wear the new earbuds and are watching a video on the mixed-reality headset will reportedly hear louder or more emphasized audio from the sound source if they swivel their heads in that direction. One description of the total effect is a more immersive experience.
Functionality of Apple’s new AirPods
The article claims that the AirPods’ infrared cameras will be able to recognize changes in the surrounding image. When a Vision Pro user moves their head, and the video player’s orientation changes in an augmented reality or virtual reality environment, they will be able to detect it. The earphones might support in-air gestures for interacting with the gadget.
Kuo stated that Apple purchases its infrared cameras from Taiwan-based Foxconn. According to reports, the massive supply chain company intends to produce 18–20 million devices, or about 10 million AirPods. These are only estimated figures, though, and the actual production would rely on the state of the market.

Moving ahead, as per reports, even without the IR cameras, Apple intends to add some new features to AirPods with iOS 18, including new head gestures, such as nodding or shaking your head to answer or decline a call. Users of the newest AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max can also play games with Personalized Spatial Audio and head tracking. When iOS 18 is released from beta this fall, these functionalities will be made generally accessible.
