Situation Of Our Economy: BULLSHIT Jobs

Dec 10, 2014 | Blog | 12 comments

"
Clearly, the system was never consciously designed. It emerged from almost a century of trial and error. But it is the only explanation for why, despite our technological capacities, we are not all working 3-4 hour days.

Ever had the feeling that your job might be made up? That the world would keep on turning if you weren’t doing that thing you do 9-5?

David Graeber, Professor of Anthropology at the London School of Economics, explored the phenomenon of bullshit jobs for STRIKE‘s summer issue – everyone who’s employed should read carefully…

Favorite Excerpt From His Piece

Pointless jobs just for the sake of keeping us all working.

The answer clearly isn’t economic: it’s moral and political.

The moral and spiritual damage that comes from this situation is profound.

Performing tasks they secretly believe do not really need to be performed.

Reduction of working hours to free the world’s population to pursue their own projects, pleasures, visions, and ideas.

Work is a moral value in itself, and that anyone not willing to submit themselves to some kind of intense work discipline for most of their waking hours deserves nothing, is extraordinarily convenient for them.

Hell is a collection of individuals who are spending the bulk of their time working on a task they don’t like and are not especially good at.

Endless piles of useless badly cooked fish piling up all over the workshop and it’s all that anyone really does.

A pretty accurate description of the moral dynamics of our own economy.

There can be no objective measure of social value.

Great story of a school friend, who turned poet, then musician, couldn’t carry ahead, lost in debt, & turned to law school, then a corporate lawyer, utterly meaningless, contributed nothing to the world, and, in his own estimation, should not really exist.

There is a whole class of salaried professionals that, should you meet them at parties and admit that you do something that might be considered interesting (an anthropologist, for example), will want to avoid even discussing their line of work entirely. Give them a few drinks, and they will launch into tirades about how pointless and stupid their job really is.

If someone had designed a work regime perfectly suited to maintaining the power of finance capital, it’s hard to see how they could have done a better job.

Real, productive workers are relentlessly squeezed and exploited.

Clearly, the system was never consciously designed. It emerged from almost a century of trial and error. But it is the only explanation for why, despite our technological capacities, we are not all working 3-4 hour days.

Yes, that’s the situation of our economy.

Seriously, Exactly my thoughts that i’ve been sparking & hard-wiring in my head. Being an introvert, i’ve embraced my past, & always tried to “Be In Present” & “Learn from it“, & most often things are left too short on words. I thank to nature, & praise it, all the time, that there are “Energies” within us, that we emit 24/7, & it’s beyond any means of communication with energies of other ones. If humans can learn more how to sniff energies of the other one, then the world would be even better place to be, to stay even more humane like we’re supposed to be.

These words above are written so beautifully, which matches up just right, on bulls eye.

Our life would be pointless if we don’t do what we are supposed to do, what we love to do, & love what we do. It shall be for ourselves first in order to give benefits to others from what we’ve Learned, Achieved & Embraced.

You got to be in “YOUR” own mind before getting influenced by any external force. Take Control, NOW!

Fantastic article to share. Yes, I’ve done my share of pointless jobs, too. Some of them paid very well and there was nothing to embrace . . .

Glad to hear your honest thoughts, Charles! The way one admits one’s actions, reflects real truth behind one’s life. I’m going to embrace that level of honesty through you. Thank you for being too kind to drop your thoughts here!

    Bull shit jobs:

If you can’t make the best of it, walk away from the rest of it.

    Life’s a blessing, don’t waste it guessing.

The article itself depicts millions of people working ,or should I say influenced by external forces. Though it may take some time to actually recognise what you actually love to do or what skill set that brain possess. Truly, trial and error is an old aged way to find what you love to do.

Correct, Sanjay! Trial & Error is the Walk-Through, to explore oneself & innovate into best possible form, the way we’re supposed to be, the way it makes us “unique” as a human being. The sooner one realize it, the better! Enjoy the journey of life!
